"I decided to forego the pleasures of urban life and flee to the family mansion in Ohai, a small farming community in Southland beneath the jagged peaks of the Takitimu ranges.
From here I hatched my plan to record my life in a folk art painting series I have discovered a rich vein of mischance, ignominy and despair which flowers freely in these rich soils and contrast sharply with the unique atmospheric effects produced by the infamous Takitimu orographic phenomenon which causes spectacular cloud formations and dramatic sunsets. Vibrant, cheerful colours which often depict death, murder, hopelessness, poverty and loss of dreams seem barely balanced with humour and childlike honesty.
Tony has been painting for most of his life and this style of painting; this "Southern Gothic" has been particularly difficult to master. The paintings, seem almost childlike, and yet are obviously not.
Tony's paintings and various art forms have been displayed on TV, in newspapers and several Art Gallery exhibitions. There has been so much interest in 'Southern Gothic' that this website has been developed to showcase and offer a wider public access to the art you see on www.bybishop.com. (Auckland Metro)
