Tony Bishop is a multitalented artist that uses several mediums to express his vision. Some of which you will find on these pages. The paintings are from various parts, usually rural areas of New Zealand. Although sometimes macabre his paintings are always done with an equal percent of humour.
Born somewhere in the central North Island of New Zealand, his migrant parents moved from house to house throughout the North Island. Tony found that art was a way he could stay away from the craziness, that was always rift in the home. He was always left to his own devices when he closed the door into his room, he shut the world out.
He won several prizes for his art in the Sunday Paper, and received a lot of attention for his art as a child and young adult.
After the obligatorily years at art school, he went on his OE, traveling extensively through India. He ended up in Sydney Australia where he attended Clown School; he has acted in several plays, movies and TV ads, and now lives a rather quiet life in a small Southland coal town, Ohai.
The black and white photographs on this site are from his extensive tour of India and the Himalayas.
The Paintings are part of his collection of Naive Art recently shown at the City Gallery in Invercargill, New Zealand. He is adding to his collection every day.
Jiffy the Clown may or not be Tony's alter ego, but the artwork is wonderful, and the tale well worth reading.
